WORKING DOGS
Working Dog breeds have been helping man from before recorded history to the present era. Working Dogs have been bred to guard, hunt, pull carts, rescue people, and even to carry packs and such. (Working Dogs once included dogs which were bred exclusively for herding and have now been placed in a separate breed category - See the Herding Dogs page.) Working Dogs are generally intelligent and independent in nature. Although they are intelligent, their independent nature can come across as being stubborn. Guarding requires dominant traits so they can also be quite territorial. A Working Dog needs strong, fair, and consistent leadership. If the proper leadership is provided, they can be extremely loyal.
Still used for working today, the Working Dog breeds include the Siberian Husky which is used as a sled dog and have also been used as a search and rescue dog, the Bernese Mountain Dog which is used as a general farm dog and was once used to pull carts, the Doberman Pinscher which is often used as a guard dog, the Samoyed which is used for both hunting and herding, and the famous Saint Bernard which was originally used to pull carts but in modern times used for search and rescue.
