NON-SPORTING DOGS

This is the miscellaneous group of dogs. They came from a variety of backgrounds, many may have been once used as Sporting Dogs or Working Dogs, but they are no longer bred to perform their original functions. Because they are no longer bred for any specific purpose other than as companions, they tend to be difficult to train due to lack of motivation. But Non-Sporting Dogs also tend to make better pets because they don’t have the driving instincts to chase, dig, guard, run off, etc.

Although Non-Sporting Dogs could have been included under the Sporting Dogs or Working Dogs categories, they are a little different than the dogs under those classes so deserve a category of their own. The Non-Sporting Dogs include the Bulldog which was originally used in bull baiting, Chow Chow which may have been used for hunting, the Dalmatian which was used as a coach dog and has only recently been reintroduced for this role as the modern “fire dog”, and the Poodle which was originally used as a retrieving water dog.
