HOUNDS
There are two kinds of Hounds - Scent Hounds and Sight Hounds. Except for the fact that these dogs were bred for hunting game, there is no other similarity between the Hound breeds. True Scent Hounds are more closely associated with Sporting Dogs than are Sight Hounds. As you might guess, Scent Hounds find their quarry through odors picked up by their very sensitive noses. Scent Hounds include coonhounds and foxhounds. Sight Hounds, which include the greyhound-like breeds, are more alike in basic bone structure, muscular development, and by the ways in which they have been used in hunting. Sight Hounds rely exclusively on their sight to hunt prey. Then, with their miraculous speed, they run down their quarry. Hounds tend to be easily distracted, especially scent hounds by odors and sight hounds by movement. Both Scent and Sight Hounds tend to be independent as they were bred to work independently of people.
Two of the most ancient dog breeds include the Afghan and Saluki Hounds. The tallest dog of all breeds is the Irish Wolfhound. And the fastest dog breeds are the Greyhound and the Whippet.
