HERDING DOGS

Herding Dogs, once part of the Working Dogs group, are bred to control and move herds of cattle, flocks of sheep, or other livestock. Some dogs are specifically bred to herd specific animals and each breed may have different styles of herding. Some Herding Dogs herd by intimidating, biting heals, or barking. Some dogs herd by keeping the animals in one area while other dogs herd by driving the animals to another location. Some Herding Dogs also act as guard dogs.

Because sometimes herding requires traveling over long distances, these breeds tend to have a lot of energy and stamina. Daily exercise is a requirement for these dogs or they can develop undesirable behaviors due to boredom. Herding Dogs are generally easily trainable and compliant.

The Herding Dogs include the Australian Cattle Dog which was bred from the Australian Dingo, the Border Collie which herds by intimidating rather than by barking or nipping, the Belgian Malinois which today is the prominent breed used as a police dog, and the Canaan Dog which is thought to originate in the land of Canaan.

Information on the herding dogs group is in progress.
